LEMONS

SELECTION

Lemons should be heavy for their size and have smooth, thin and firm skin. Avoid soft, spongy lemons with a wrinkled or bumpy skin - they’re bound to have less juice. And the smaller, the juicier.

STORAGE

Lemons are juicier if kept at room temperature, and they’ll stay fresh for up to two weeks. They’ll keep for three to four weeks if loosely wrapped in plastic and stored in the refrigerator’s crisper drawer.

GETTING
VALUE

Remove tarnish on brass, copper and stainless steel with a paste of lemon juice and salt. Coat the affected area, leave it on for 5 minutes, wash in warm water, rinse and polish dry.
Scrub stains on clothes with equal parts lemon juice and water instead of using bleach.
Sanitise cutting boards by rubbing with the cut side of a lemon.
The leaves of a lemon tree can be used to make tea and add flavour to cooked meats and seafoods.

INTERESTING
FACTS

The lemon is an evergreen, which means it produces fruit all year round. Each tree yields between 500 and 600 pounds (225kgs and 270kgs) of lemons a year.
