GRAPEFRUIT

SELECTION

Because of their thick skins, any brown marks or scratches don’t necessarily affect the quality. Choose ‘heavy’ fruit and avoid any with wrinkly skin or soft spots at the stem end.

STORAGE

For the juiciest grapefruit, store at room temperature for up to one week. If you want to keep them for 2 to 3 weeks, then rather refrigerate.

Freshly squeezed grapefruit juice, if stored covered in a refrigerator, will retain 98% of its vitamin C for up to a week.

GETTING
VALUE

Grapefruits aren’t only breakfast fruits – the segments add a tangy taste to salads, and the juice makes a delicious ice cream topping. They are also a far healthier alternative to sugar-laden energy drinks before your workout. They contain very few calories, and the natural sugars boost the muscles and ultimately the effectiveness of your session.
On the beauty front, grapefruit refreshes the skin and the amino acid present makes the skin firmer and softer.
Pink and red grapefruit have huge amounts of beta carotene that are necessary to keep the eyes healthy and improve vision.
Haitians love grapefruit jam and in Costa Rica grapefruit is cooked to serve as sweets. For a moreish dessert, stuff them with dulce de leche, known as candy milk.
